Chicago, Il – Touring in support of Magic Giant, and their most recent album release, Kids in the Night, LA based rock band Weathers opened up the evening by having the crowd dance and sing along with their single, “I’m Not Ok”. With Cameron Olsen on lead guitar, Brennen Bates on bass and keyboards, Cole Carson on drums, and Cameron Boyer on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, it’s instantly easy to see how this young band has developed a relatively strong following pretty quickly.

Being an opening band, at times it can be hard to win over an audience that is predominately there to see the headliner. Not the case on Friday night however for Weathers. While the set was short, the band wasted absolutely no time or energy on stage. Boyer had the audience involved right from the start, getting the crowd to sing and dance along. As he took to the stage, at times using the mic stand as his dance partner, he danced and swaggered across the stage acting much like the pied piper, getting the crowd to follow his lead with dancing, clapping and singing along to some of their most popular songs, such as “Happy Pills”, “I Don’t Wanna Know”, “Dirty Money” and their most recent release, “The Night is Calling”. But it’s not just Boyer that is moving on stage, Cameron Olsen and bassist Brennen Bates are also up there moving to the music, encouraging others to do the same in the crowd, and if Cole Carson figures out how to get his drumkit to move along with him, he’ll also be joining them. It didn’t take too long before the crowd was won over by the band.

The best part of my job is getting to hear bands like Weathers for the very first time while reviewing their show. Their music is very much up-tempo, with a rock/pop melodies with a hint of 80’s pop flair. While I thoroughly enjoyed all of their music, perhaps my favorite song of the evening was “I’m Not Ok”. An instant uplifting musical piece that if you were even feeling a little bit down, by the time the chorus hits, you were moving to the music whether you wanted to or not. Like the rest of their music, it’s infectious, catchy, easy to dance to and sing along with.

Watch out for Weathers in 2019 and mark the date on your calendar for when they come to your area – this is a band that you’re not going to want to miss.

Ian Bardecki
Born in Scotland, raised in the United States, based in Chicago. Ian Bardecki is a professional photographer, avid motorcyclist, reader, IT geek, gaming and comic book nerd, who was bathed in music at a young age by his mother who constantly played classical piano in their home. While she also introduced him to the Beatles and Elvis, his father forced on him Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, the local paper boy had him listening to Alice Cooper, his uncle then turned him onto KISS and his first 8 track tape, while his friends turned him onto punk music. Today, his music library ranges from Amadeus Mozart to ZZ Ward and everything in between. Hesitantly agreeing to fill in one night to photograph a concert at a local venue in San Francisco for a friend, was where the accidental love and passion for concert photography was born and hasn’t stopped growing since. As a freelance photographer, Ian has had the honor of working with various artists like, John 5, Sick Puppies, Scott Stapp, Drowning Pool, Anti-Flag and Art of Dying, just to name a few.
