Amsterdam, The Netherlands – Dope Lemon, the band led by Australian artist Angus Stone (one half of Angus & Julia Stone), returned this May with its fifth studio album Golden Wolf. With its laid-back, sun-drenched soundscapes, the record feels like the perfect soundtrack for this late-summer evening at a sold-out Paradiso, where even before the doors open, an eager crowd is ready to be swept away by Stone’s blend of mellow rock, psychedelia, and sultry storytelling.
Opening the night are Piri & Tommy, a duo from the UK who blend drum and bass with pop and R&B in a playful, infectious style. They first broke through with their viral hit “Soft Spot”, a track that perfectly captures their mix of smooth vocals and dancefloor-ready beats. Sophie “Piri” moves across the stage like a true pop diva, effortlessly drawing the crowd in. Their TikTok-famous hit “On & On” was, of course, part of the set, while “yoyo” even turned into a quick dance lesson for the audience. A surprise highlight came with their cover of Moloko’s classic “Sing It Back”, which had the whole room moving. And when “Beachin” came around, beach balls were tossed into the crowd, adding to the fun. If anyone wasn’t ready to party before, they certainly were after this performance.
Dope Lemon took the stage to loud cheers and launched straight into “Stonecutters”. Early in the set, Angus introduced “John Belushi” from the new album Golden Wolf, explaining how his lifelong love for The Blues Brothers films inspired the track. At several points during the show, performers in oversized animal heads appeared on stage, adding a playful, surreal layer to the dreamy atmosphere.
Musically, the band delivered with remarkable precision and warmth. The grooves were tight, the guitars rich and expansive, and Angus’s distinctive drawl carried effortlessly through the room, giving even the more laid-back tracks an undeniable presence. What stood out was the balance between looseness and control: the songs felt unhurried and hazy, yet the musicianship behind them was crisp and confident.
The atmosphere inside a sold-out Paradiso mirrored that quality—warm, relaxed, and deeply engaged. Behind the band, psychedelic visuals filled the giant screen, while bursts of vibrant lights elevated key moments. From the front row to the balconies, the entire room seemed locked into the flow of the music, a connection only strengthened by the band’s clear enjoyment on stage.
Highlights included the dreamy title track “Golden Wolf”, the fan-favorite “Honey Bones”, the groove-heavy “Electric Green Lambo”, and the vibrant “Pink Rose Cadillac”. Another special moment came with “Little Whiskey”, originally by Angus & Julia Stone, which drew warm cheers of recognition. The set was tight and well-paced, though it was somewhat surprising that fewer songs from Golden Wolf made it into the setlist. Given the strength of the new material, a deeper dive into the album would have been welcome—but the mix of older favorites and select new tracks kept the energy high throughout.
For the encore, the animal-headed performers returned once more during “Home Soon”, before Angus closed the night by thanking every corner of the room with a gracious bow and a tip of his hat. It was a gesture that summed up the evening perfectly: humble, heartfelt, and leaving the audience with the sense that they had been part of something both intimate and celebratory. A night where Dope Lemon proved once again that their hazy, sun-soaked sound can fully captivate a room—even one as packed and storied as Paradiso.
