Richmond, VA – Long Island, New York OSDM (old school death metal) heavyweights Pyrexia bring the heavy to Richmond with support from New York City’s Animals Killing People, Phoenix, Arizona’s Atoll, New Jersey’s Reeking Aura and local support from Richmond’s Crucial Rip.
I have known Crucial Rip‘s lead singer Russell Pompa for years and have always managed to miss them playing live. Well, that streak ended last weekend when the band opened for this sick tour package. Playing a short set of songs from their two full length albums, 2018’s The Object of Infection and March 31, 2023’s Violent Retribution, the band established the pace and level of brutality for the evening. I had no idea what to expect from Reeking Aura until they started playing. What the audience got was sick sounding New York style death metal with a little hardcore attitude, which I thought was cool. Their set consisted of songs from their 2020 EP Beneath The Canopy of Compost and 2022’s full length album Blood and Bonemeal. I really liked these guys so if you get a chance, check them out.

Atoll came a long way to join this tour and while they played well, I just felt that something was off about them. This could be that with mostly New York and New Jersey death metal bands on the package they sounded different and I need to give their music a little more time to get into it. The crowd liked them and ultimately that is what’s important.
Animals Killing People were an interesting surprise for me, almost technical death metal style grindcore delivered with military precision as well as having that “New York death metal” feel. I liked these guys a lot and you should give them a listen when you get a chance.

The last time I saw Pyrexia live was at Empire in Springfield, Virginia when the “Carnival of Death Tour” played there in 2014. I have been craving the kind of brutality that only they can deliver. In a set that consisted of older material that went as far back as 1993’s Sermon of Mockery, the guys brought the attitude and savagery that only Pyrexia delivers.
