The last night of the “Weight Of The False Self World Tour” Hatebreed brings the chaos to Norfolk, Virginia with support from Liverpool, England’s death metal masters Carcass, Chicago’s hardcore band Harms Way and São Paulo, Brazil’s all female death metal band Crypta.
It has been a little over a year since I last saw Crypta play live and for a number of my friends, it was their first time seeing them. I spent a few minutes talking to one of my friends about Nervosa and Crypta, two killer bands from Brazil. Although their set was short, they got the crowd going and set the pace for the evening.

For me it has been six years since I last saw Harms Way live, they supported Cannibal Corpse on their tour and played the last show that Shaka’s Live in Virginia Beach had before shutting down. The dynamic changed as the music went from death metal to hardcore, the pit got heavier and saw a couple of crowd surfers as the band roared through their set. Toward the end they brought out Fernanda Lira of Crypta to do a Sepultura cover of a song I didn’t catch. For me I thought the set was short, but despite that Harms Way looked and sounded good, it was great to see them again.

I have been a fan of Carcass for years and it always seemed like I just missed catching the band at a show. One of the reasons why I wanted to cover this show was to see them live and they were amazing!!!! This is a word I don’t use often because it is overused by people, but Carcass was amazing. It is not often that you see a band live and they sound so good live, you actually think you are listening to them in your living room. Their set consisted of mostly older material which made the old school guys in the audience really happy. If you haven’t seen Carcass live, catch them the next time they come around. I plan to.

It has been almost a year to the day since I last saw Hatebreed live, and that was the two sets they played on Headbangers Boat. The set started out with a video where a number of musicians from Ice-T to Randy Blythe congratulated the band on turning 30 and that they hope there will be more. The guys were glad to be in Norfolk and played their asses off. While there was plenty of circle pit activity, the lack of crowd surfing was perplexing. I don’t know whether it was a change in security policy or people didn’t want to crowd surf, despite that, they were having a good time!!!! Jamey Jasta took a moment to thank the bands that came with them on the tour and continued the musical beatdown. I was talking to a friend of mine about the first time I saw Hatebreed in 2008 on a tour package called “Stillborn Fest”. Without getting into details, it was a crazy night and this is what I expect when I see Hatebreed. It was an incredible show and for my friends who missed it, you should have made the effort. It was that good!!!
