Nashville, IN. – To quote Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, “Oh What A Night…“! Mike Campbell & the Dirty Knobs made a stop at Brown County Music Center in lovely Nashville, IN. to bring us the Vagabonds, Virgins, and Misfits tour.
If you’re not familiar, allow me to update you…Mike Campbell has spent the last forty some years collaborating, recording and touring as lead guitarist for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. He’d been by Tom’s side since the early days of Mudcrutch (Tom’s band before the Heartbreakers) and till the very end when we lost Tom unexpectedly in 2017. He helped pen many of the hits from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers including “Refugee“, “Here Comes My Girl“, “You Got Lucky“, and “Runnin’ Down A Dream” to just name a few. He played and composed Don Henley’s “Boys of Summer” and “Heart of the Matter” AND worked on most of Stevie Nick’s solo albums. Mike also stepped in and toured with Fleetwood Mac during 2018-2019 after the departure of Lindsey Buckingham. To say Mike has been around and has “chops” is an understatement.
Joining Mike on stage is The Dirty Knobs; currently consisting of fellow Heartbreaker Steve Ferrone on drums, Chris “Sidewynder” Holt on guitar/keys and Lance Morrison on bass. Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs have been around for about fifteen years as a side project from the Heartbreakers and have currently released three studio albums with 2024’s Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits, 2022’s External Combustion, and their 2020 debut with Wreckless Abandon. This tour consists of only fifteen dates and Brown County Music Center was lucky enough to be night number two on this run; and what a treat it was – the band was on fire! Buy the ticket if they’re coming to your town.
Opening the night was the sensational Shannon McNally. Shannon is an independent singer-songwriter from Long Island (New York) and credits her inspiration from her fellow “anti-heroes” J.J. Cale, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, and Dr. John. Being self-managed for most of her career after playing the record label game for over 10 years, Shannon is grateful to be on stage and get to play beside (in her words) “legends that I got to see on stage when I was in high school!” Her set was full of stories, spirit and grit; showcasing her independence and holding the audience’s attention before the main act. Make sure to check out her new Special Edition EP, out now exclusively on BANDCAMP.
