Virginia Beach, VA – Touring in support of their May 12, 2023 album Terrasite, Cattle Decapitation came to Hampton Roads to crush Peabody’s with support from New York’s death metal masters Immolation, Columbus, Ohio’s death metal outfit Sanguisugabogg and New York’s all-female death metal band Castrator.
Castrator started the night off a few minutes early, but got things going. Filling in for guitarist Kimberly Orellana who couldn’t make the tour was Kurtis Layne, who did an outstanding job. Clarissa asked at one point if anyone had seen them play with Exhumed last year at the Norfolk Taphouse, which got a few hoots and screams. I got into the pit to take a few photos of the band and the moshing was energetic and fun. It was great to see them back in the Hampton Roads area to throw down.

This was my first time seeing Sanguisugabogg live. Talking to some of my friends who were at the show, they didn’t like them much. To me, they sound like a hardcore band with death metal vocals, which isn’t a bad thing but for some it is an acquired taste. That didn’t stop the fans who came for them from moshing and headbanging. Their set consisted almost exclusively of songs from their February 3, 2023 album Homicidal Ecstasy, which pleased the fans greatly.

It is not very often that bands such as Immolation and Cattle Decapitation come to Hampton Roads to play. The last time both of the bands played was in November of 2017 at the former Shaka’s Live in separate shows. Immolation supporting Mayhem and Cattle Decapitation supporting Revocation, so it is a special night when two of metal’s heavy hitters come to play locally and fans don’t have to drive to Richmond, DC or Baltimore.
Fans of Immolation got a special treat as the band played a set that spanned nearly their entire existence as a band with songs from their 2022 effort Acts of God to 1991’s Dawn of Possession. The old school metalheads took over the pit and threw down with the band.

As I said previously, it has been nearly seven years since I last saw Cattle Decapitation live and it was definitely worth the wait. Travis Ryan took control of the crowd and marched them through their set with military precision, which included most of their 2023 release Terrasite and their three previous albums. What can be said about a band that plays crushing riffs and has incredible stage presence that hasn’t already been said. This was an awesome night of death metal and we enjoyed every minute of it.
