The Canal Club hosts The LEGION 30th Anniversary Tour

Richmond, VirginiaDeicide brings The LEGION 30th Anniversary Tour to Richmond’s Canal Club with support from the Canadian death metal band Kataklysm and fellow Florida death metallers Inhuman Condition. The opening band for previous dates, Bone Storm, had to drop off due to an illness.

It has been years since I attended or photographed a show at the Canal Club, fortunately not much has changed. The last time I attended a show here, it was in the downstairs part of the venue whereas the tour package tonight would play the upstairs on a better equipped stage.

Starting off the evening is a band I saw on tour almost a year ago, Inhuman Condition. They are touring in support of their latest effort Fearsick, released July 15th, 2022. Like the last time I saw them live, Inhuman Condition brings a combination of heavy and fun to their sets which is different to say the least. Jeramie Kling’s antics including using stage lighting to show off guitarist Taylor Nordbeg and jumping off the stage to join in the circle pit is both welcomed and unexpected. Don’t let the fun and games fool you, Inhuman Condition is serious about their music and delivered a brutal set.

Kataklysm is a band that a lot of my friends don’t like for one reason or another. I have always found their music to scratch a certain itch with me, so I am always stoked to see them live, which has been hard over the last few years. It seemed I just missed them when they were part of a tour package. Playing their seventh album Serenity in Fire (released March 9th, 2004) in its entirety gave me an opportunity to listen to material I had previously not listened to since I found them with 2008’s effort Prevail. I think some in the audience were not into them, but for those who had an open mind they had a good time. Kataklysm always delivers the goods and it was great to see them again.

It has been over ten years since I last saw Deicide play live and that show was in Richmond at a venue that no longer exists – Kingdom, formerly known as Alley Katz, was a venue that is almost legendary among Richmond metalheads. Legion was the second album released by Deicide (March 1, 1992) and is considered one of the most brutal death metal albums in the history of the genre. Seeing the band play it live in its entirety is a rare privilege, and they delivered it in an almost military-like precision.  The audience loved it and responded with lots of headbanging and some pit activity. Taylor Nordberg pulled double duty as the guitarist for both Inhuman Condition and Deicide, who joined the band on January 20th of this year and absolutely killed it tonight. As a bonus, they played three songs from Once upon the Cross and the title track from Scars of the Crucifix to end an incredible evening of death metal.
