Indianapolis, IN. – Summer in Indy just isn’t complete without a visit from Lyle Lovett & his Large Band. Sunday evening brought Lyle and his ensemble to Everwise Amphitheater at White River State Park for an intimate pavilion only performance in front of an appreciative crowd. The Lyle t-shirts were thick representing years of touring and showing the loyalty of his long time fans. Once you have seen Lyle, you always want to come back!
Impeccably attired in black suit and tie despite the summer heat (a trademark of “the large band”) the musicians walked out onto a simple unadorned stage and started the show with an instrumental highlighting the individual talents of the musicians. Lyle strolled out in a sharply pressed, crisp blue suit and tie, leaving no doubt who was the star of the show. With 15 full length album releases to choose from, Lyle did an excellent job of mixing fan favorites from deep within his songbook to more recent material inspired by his foray into fatherhood.
If you’ve never seen Lyle, the banter between songs is worth the price of admission alone! His song introductions and stories from growing up in Texas to having twins later in life, entertained and amused the crowd (often drawing belly laughs from every one in attendance). The music is another thing entirely – Lyle has always hand-picked the best of the best to hit the road with him. From the rhythm section of Russ Kunkel and Leland Sklar (if you don’t know who these two cats are, Wiki has pages full of info) to his long-time steel guitar player Buck Reid – throw in a couple of the Muscle Shoals Horns, Indiana native Jeff White on acoustic guitar and mandolin, electric guitarist James Harrah, and pianist Jim Cox; you’ve got the cream of the crop. And Lyle gives them all a chance to shine…you can’t ask for a more entertaining evening.
Be sure to keep an eye out for Lyle Lovett and His Large Band coming to a town near you or visit his website (here). The Indy show wrapped-up this leg of the tour but the band will head back out at the end of September through November, including a stop at Kentucky’s famous Bourbon & Beyond Festival September 19-22 (with Lyle’s performance on the 19th).
