From Press Release –

The Grand Kyiv Ballet,  a company which organizes the touring activities of Ukrainian ballet dancers, has announced the the North American premiere of “The Snow Queen“. The production is a collaboration between choreographer Alexander Abdukarimov and Finnish composer Tuomas Kantelinen. Snow Queen is a classic fairytale based on the works of Hans Christian Anderson. Grand Kyiv has transformed the story into a ballet about how friendship, warmth, and devotion can overcome a spell cast by the wicked queen.

The tale begins as an evil troll creates a magic mirror that magnifies the worst in all the gaze into it. The mirror shatters and its pieces are spreads to all corners of the world.

As young friends, Kai and Gerda, are in a flower garden, a shard infects young Kai, turning his heart cold. It causes him to see everything as ugly and dark. Kai is swept away by the Snow Queen to her icy palace. The Queen is a powerful and evil ruler who travels the world, bringing the cold of winter wherever she goes.

Kai’s friend, Gerda, embarks on a quest to rescue him from the spell the Snow Queen has cast. Gerda, pure of heart, sets out on a perilous journey to save Kai. Along the way she  overcomes trolls, robbers, courtiers in the palace, and a cunning raven. She also makes many friends along the way.

Gerda’s love, warmth, and tears drive her quest to find Kai and melt his icy heart. The flowers and roses bloom once again!
