San Francisco, CA – DNA Lounge hosted a fantastically wicked set of performances from Moris Blak and Danny Blu. The road show is called the American Dream Tour, and the evening delivered that dream in a brooding twist, giving the audience an event that tapped into a blend of everything from sultry dance pop and electronica to grinding industrial and metal.
The show opened with the female-fronted Eva X, followed by Mechanical Vein, a solo performer with one of the most unique combo instruments you might find on a stage. While being the opening acts, they introduced what would become a thematic thread of the night with frontwoman Eva jumping in on vocals during one song with Mechanical Vein. It would be the first of several times in the evening where guest appearances added to the show, with members of these two groups stepping in to join their friends playing after them on songs that otherwise may not have been able to be performed.
While he apologized for not wearing his default stage outfit, as it had been stolen earlier in the day in a vehicle break-in, Danny Blu’s alternative outfit of a black tank top and jeans gave him the stunning vibe of a gothic Freddy Mercury during his performance. He was the only person on stage for the majority of his set, but he more than filled the space with sparkling and sultry dark-prince energy, which permeated the stage and its adjacent stairs. This was not his first visit to DNA Lounge, as he’d previously visited with Echo Black in 2019, but this was his first time on DNA’s impressive main stage, and he made every bit of it work for him.
Moris Blak came up next, and if Danny Blu’s performance was the seductive goth-pop beauty of the evening, it could be said that Moris claimed the role of the intimidating, electronic beast. Starting out wearing a mask reminiscent of several different horror icons, he led the crowd into a labyrinth of unrelenting dance beats blended into grinding heavy metal. Even as the mask was put aside shortly after the start of his set, the brooding ferocity of his performance remained, a gnashing metal dance show masterminded by a singular, highly-imposing conductor. After an intense solo set, he was then joined by Danny Blu, who joined him on, among other things, a fabulous remake of Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation” that needs to be heard to be believed.
The American Dream Tour continues into mid-July, with dates along the eastern side of the country that wrap up in Tampa, FL. Keep an eye on them in the meantime for more information on how you can be a part of this dark, electro-goth industrial event.
