Domingos Coxi is a Film and TV Journalist for the Hollywood News Source and Founder of The Sunday Film Club, and has hosted multiple of his own panels for MCM Comic Con in the last few years, which was featured for an article on the Popverse website and other publications covering New York Comic Con and MCM Comic Con London. He has interviewed young world class talent from behind and in front of the camera, written about various articles from Film, TV, and covered well-renowned festivals and events such as Vault Festival, Soul Fest and ABFF at the BFI, Frightfest, The 25th Annual Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival and many more.

Digital Beat Magazine: You run an organisation called the Sunday Film Club. Would you be able to tell us a bit about what that is and what inspired you to create it?

Domingos Coxi: I founded and launched The Sunday Film Club officially in 2017, but had the idea for a good few years before that. I had a love and passion for movies and TV since I was a kid, I would read Empire magazine, watch things on YouTube like Afterbuzz TV, The Hollywood Reporter Roundtables which inspired me, where actors, directors, fans from the media would discuss their love of various movies, discuss TV shows, behind the scenes, learning different facts in the film industry and much more. I wanted to create a film club where young adults could discuss their love for the film industry from the local community as watching and discussing films is universal. Having conversations and so The Sunday Film Club began to evolve from there.

DBM: You’ve taken the Sunday Film Club to panels across the UK with mcm comic con being one of those. What do you hope that viewers take away from listening to the panel?

DC: I wanted aspiring young filmmakers, creators who want to work in the industry to be inspired, and have the belief that they can succeed and make it in the chosen field and there are different pathways no matter your background. I have been very fortunate to know very talented friends and fellow creators, writers, filmmakers, actors in the industry and have them appear on the panels to educate and help people and give advice. By following my passion in the entertainment industry, I have had great opportunities and doors opened for me and believe in giving back and helping others.

DBM: What got you into the film industry to begin with?

DC: Watching Martial Arts films from Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Comedies and action films from Eddie Murphy, Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Arnold Schwarzenegger, The Superman and Batman films, and so much more I could name. I was very young but this left a lasting impression on me.

DBM: You’ve worked alongside loads of amazing people. What do you think it takes to get noticed in this industry?

DC: Like I have mentioned on the panels and different interviews I have done, you need to find what you love, work hard to hone that craft, and be your authentic self and keep working, create your own pathway, show humility and try to be a good human being. Try to create a community with like-minded people as you come up in the industry together.

DBM: I hear you’ve recently started a podcast to expand on the Sunday film club?

DC: Yes, that is true. On this podcast I have been interviewing a variety of talented young filmmakers and creatives about our mutual love for Film/TV and Entertainment and what it means to them. We will explore each guest’s origin story and the passion they have for their craft and much more.

DBM: You write very interesting film and tv reviews for the Hollywood News Source. Would you be able to explain your process in writing those?

DC: My process is to make sure the audience is engaged, and not to be repetitive in my articles I write and to be invested in what I am writing about. I want to keep evolving and be fresh and interesting as possible. If I can I will try to teach the audience something possibly they may not know about or come at it from a different point of view. The goal for me is to always keep improving and evolving.

DBM: Apart from film, do you have any hobbies?

DC: Writing, My Art, Watching Football and Movies.

DBM: Who has been your biggest influence/inspiration?

DC: My Mother as she allowed me to explore my love of movies and art as a child, and always supported and pushed me to always be creative and express myself.

DBM: You are generally the one asking the question not answering so how does it feel that the roles have switched?

DC: It felt strange at first to be on the other side of an interview, but it has been good to reflect on my journey in this industry so far, and appreciate the different things I have learned and experienced.

DBM: Do you have any advice for anyone trying to break into the film industry?

DC: Research, study, and practice whatever it is you want to do, and make sure it is something you enjoy, love to do and start making it happen. Keep evolving, keep improving, trust your instincts and trust the process.

DBM: Thank you for speaking to us today.

Born and raised in London, I have always had a passion for photography. From a young age I have borrowed my parents cameras to go off on my own photography adventures. After many years of 'hand-me-downs' and borrowing of my parents cameras I was lucky enough to receive a 'wish' from a charity called Starlight who gave me an amazing camera. This pushed me into enjoying and learning about photography more. My love of music combined with my love of photography and entered me into the world of concert photography, which is now my main area of focus. It's such a great feeling to be able to capture a moment of pure joy between the crowd and artist which can't be found outside of gigs. I love capturing that moment, the emotion, the power and the energy that surrounds the event. There is just something about the raw rush and power of a gig that always pulls me back for more.
