Indianapolis, IN.Primus along with co-headliner Coheed & Cambria and support act Too Many Zooz thrilled fans at Everwise Amphitheater at White River State Park for a full night of progressive rock with a whole lot of funk metal on the side. Even though inclemental weather slightly delayed the opening of the venue for the evening; the storms quickly moved through downtown and did not affect the timeline of the three bands. Due to prior commitments, I was unable to catch Too Many Zooz or photograph Coheed and Cambria but was able hear the end of Coheed & Cambria’s set and really enjoyed it. I had a chance to speak to a few in attendance while waiting on the set change and learned there were just as many people there to see Coheed & Cambria as there was to see Primus. The few I spoke to were really happy with the set performed by the band.

It was finally time for Primus featuring Les Claypool (lead vocals, bass, double bass), Larry “Lar” LaLonde (guitars, backing vocals) and Tim “Herb” Alexander (drums, backing vocals). I believe the last time I saw Primus was when they headlined Lollapolooza in July of 1993 at Deer Creek Music Center (now known as Ruoff Music Center) in Noblesville, Indiana. A quick glance around at the crowd saw fans of all ages waiting in anticipation for the show to start. I never heard an official number on attendance but if this show wasn’t sold-out, it was pretty darn close.

The band walked out to Danny Elfman’s tune “Clown Dream” and proceeded to take the crowd on a two hour tour of their catalogue mainly focusing the set on songs from their first four albums – Frizzle Fry, Sailing the Seas of Cheese, Pork Soda, and Tales From The Punchbowl with a few cuts from Green Naugahyde throw in. The crowd ate it up and could (often) be heard over Claypool’s vocals as they sang along. You could see the “young ones” moshing in the pit and on the lawn. If I’d been 30 years younger, I would have been right there with them! By the time the band got to their mega hit “My Name is Mud” followed by a rare performance of my personal favorite “Tommy the Cat” the crowd’s energy was over the top. You couldn’t sit down…and why would you want to? Claypool’s funky bass kept everyone thumpin’ – NOBODY plays like Les!
