It’s been a fantastic 15th birthday for the now iconic Lytham Festival in Lancashire, UK, and Sunday saw Pitbull bring his “I’m Back” tour to town to close proceedings for another year. The weather was warm and thankfully dry after some heavy rain for previous days and the 25,000 crowd were very much in the party mood with a sea of bald caps being worn in honour of the evening’s headliner.
Support was provided by UK rapper Tinchy Stryder and Lil Jon, whose throwback set lit the fuse for a carnival atmosphere. His back catalogue of work and collaborations was the perfect warm up for the main event, and hit “Turned Down For What” was clearly a crowd favourite, however some unexpected covers of song like “Sweet Caroline” and “Apache” were just a joy to watch.

It was a full on performance from the word go when Mr. Worldwide himself took to the stage. With his career now covering 20 years his catalogue of work was the perfect soundtrack to a night dedicated to fun, love and respect, and was the prefect start to a long evening for a crowd full of England football fans eagerly awaiting their teams 1am GMT World Cup game against Mexico. His choice of opener, “Don’t Stop The Party”, couldn’t have been more perfect. The song set the tone for a night of dancing and celebration, and his interactions with the audience felt truly sincere and heartfelt. The staging of the whole show was also a spectacle, vivid graphics on a huge screen on stage transported us from Lancashire to Miami, even if our weather felt chilly to the Florida native. He promised us some US heat and he delivered, teaching us a little Spanish and all whilst seeming genuinely delighted that everyone was having a ball.
The pace didn’t let up and we were treated to songs that he has collaborated on, with “Get On The Floor” and “DJ Got Us Falling in Love” getting huge cheers, and when he did step off stage for an occasional wardrobe change his DJ kept the momentum going with 2000’s club hits and mixes. Pitbull was no stranger to mixing his songs as well, with Bon Jovi’s “Living On A Prayer” and “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes used to whip up even more singing and dancing from us all. We also got a nod to the World Cup with “We Are One (Ole,Ola)” and a reminder from Pitbull “that we are all one race, and that’s the human race”. The 1hr 30 min set flew in all too quickly, and as the sun set the final two songs of “Fireball” and “Give Me Everything” had everyone hugging, dancing, laughing and even shedding some tears. As he stood smiling over the crowd, he told us how privileged he felt to be there to celebrate Lytham Festival’s 15th birthday with us all and as we made our way back into the Lancashire night I suspect everyone took a little bit of Miami back home with them too.
