Pierce the Veil Are Kings For The Day In OVO Hydro

Glasgow, SCT: The latest tour by Pierce The Veil saw them bring Glasgow an epic line-up of three support bands to start the run up to the weekend.  An unusually early start time of 5:55 pm though saw a reasonable number of fans miss the electric energy of opening act Crawlers, who are always exciting to watch live and were again on top form. With each support act only having 30 minutes each to show their wares, they hit hard with songs such as “Feminist Radical Hypocritical Delusional” and viral TikTok hit “Come Over (Again)”, proving why they are a band to keep a close eye on in future.

Hot Mulligan followed with another storming set, and I must admit it’s the first time I’ve heard ever them.  The buzz around the OVO Hydro for them was intense, and once theygot on stage it was easy to see why.  Touted by many there as the next headlining band to make it big, they smashed their way through “Drink Milk and Run”, “Fly Move (The Whole Time)” and “Islands in The Sun” amongst others.  The perfect warm up for our headline act.

Our third and final support was Cavetown, whose indie rock (although a little more subdued than Hot Mulligan) got the crowd bouncing and singing.  They’ve become so much more confident on stage and absolutely owned it, with fan favourites “Sweet Tooth” and “Boys Will Be Bugs” making appearances.  Pierce The Veil lead singer Vic Fuentes came out and duetted on “A Kind Thing To Do”, and the full-on finale of “Devil Town” was bona fide rock.

The downside to such an early start was that by the time Pierce The Veil were to come on stage the crowd had had one or two (or several, to be honest) beers.  A Glasgow audience that’s partaken in a lot of alcohol is a rowdy scene and not for the faint-hearted, and plastic pint glasses were being thrown across the arena in the wait for our headliners.  Thankfully they came on in good time as the sound of “El Ray” played, and the crowd screamed their approval.  Right from the start, bass player Jaime Preciado and guitarist Tony Perry race across the stage and each jump onto one the four platforms placed across the front of the stage.  Lead singer Vic Fuentes joins them and the set began with “Death of an Executioner”, going straight from that into “Bulls In The Bronx”

There’s barely a let-up throughout the set as the tempo is maintained, and although there’s not a lot of interaction with the crowd to start with Vic mentions how it’s been a dream of theirs to play such a big gig in Glasgow.  The show itself is an exploration of their roots and music from the last 18 years, and “Floral & Fading” was preceded with a surprise rendition of The Pixies “Where Is My Mind?”.  A change of pace followed with “She Makes Dirty Words Sound Pretty”, as the band took a well earned seat for the first part of the song.  The set ended with “Emergency Contact” and the chanting began immediately for their return.  They quickly obliged with “Disaterology”, “Hold on Till May” and closed with their iconic “King For A Day”.  They promised us they’ll be back, and on this showing it’ll be yet another sell out gig for them.
