Icon for Hire Rounds out 3 awesome female fronted bands at the Canal Club on 5/18/2023. Photo credit: Dave Pearson

Richmond, VA – The night was May 18, 2023, the place was the Canal Club! The stars had to be aligned as three awesome female fronted bands had the rafters shaking on the lower floor of the venue.

Leading off the night was Virginia’s very own Magg Dylan, consisting of Suzanne DeIulio (vocals), Brucifer Jordan (guitar), Les Moseley (bass), and Adam Hoye (drums). This is the second time I have seen them and have to say they kicked ass. The band will be going on a tour this summer with a stop in my hometown neck of the woods (literally), Rockfest in Cadott, WI. They were an awesome opening choice for the night.

Next on the agenda was an Ohio band, Hooked Like Helen. Fronted by Nikki Stipp (vocals and keys), Jon Stipp (bass), Heather Thomas (drums), and Conor Spellane (guitar). They provided a hard pounding alternative rock set full of stories focusing on many hardships of members of the band. I loved their sound and would love to catch them next time around.

The headliner for the night was Icon for Hire. They were a band I missed at last year’s Blue Ridge Rock Fest and wanted to catch again. Ariel Bloomer (vocals), Shawn Jump (guitars), and Adam Kronshagen (drums) tore the Canal Club to shreds with a hip hoppy alternate rock style that had the crowd going nuts.

Dave Pearson is based out of Richmond, VA by way of Hayward, WI. He has long had a passion for music. Growing up in rural Wisconsin, he rocked out to the likes of Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, and The Lettermen. Then, one Saturday night, being the rebel he was born to be, he caught an Alice Cooper interview (it may have been on The Midnight Special) and saw him perform, “Welcome to My Nightmare”. Dave was hooked on Rock and Roll (and many other genres as well). Dave has enjoyed (amateur) photography to some degree most of his adult life. Recently Dave started to apply his event photography skills in various music settings with success. He finds that photographing a performance gives him a much greater appreciation for the artist.
