Mudvayne: LD 50 25th Anniversary Tour at The Dome

Virginia Beach, VA – What’s old is new again. The crowd waiting outside The Dome to get in took me back the 2000’s, that nu-metal never really went away and was just taking a break. Mudvayne brought old school metal to the Virginia Beach oceanfront with support from Static-X and Vended.

This was my first time seeing Vended live, up until the tour announcement I had never heard of them. I honestly did not pay that much attention to them because I was more interested in Static-X and Mudvayne. A few people pointed out that their look and sound is essentially “Slipknot Lite” based on the lineage of the founding members Griffin Taylor and Simon Crahan. Listening to them I thought they sounded more metalcore than nu-metal and had a great deal of energy with plenty of movement on stage. Their set consisted mostly of songs from their 2024 effort “Vended”. Response by the crowd was good with a decent amount of headbanging and some pit activity. If you want to hear something a little different, give Vended a listen.

I have always enjoyed Static-X and seeing them live this time was different than previous shows. The first was having characters come on stage and blowing bubbles from both sides of the stage, this was quite entertaining and slippery at the same time. Security came out with towels to wipe up the floor of the photo pit so nobody would fall or face plant. They roared through the first four songs so fast that a few people lost count of the number of songs played. I told my friend who was shooting for a local radio station that we were on song four and needed to leave the photo pit, she had no idea, and I guess security slipped up as well. I enjoyed the Hell out of it as Xer0, Koichi and Tony jammed their asses off and the crowd was having a good time. Waiting to be let back in to shoot Mudvayneb I got into a conversation with several people regarding Xer0’s look and performance. A couple of people thought his actions were robotic and forced and one young man in particular thought that Xer0 shouldn’t be an almost carbon copy of Wayne Static. I had seen Static-X enough to see the evolution of Xer0 and said that I don’t think Xer0’s look or actions were not heavily considered by Edsel Dope and Static-X as being tasteful and sharing the memory of Wayne while giving the audience a taste of what it was like with Wayne without being a carbon copy. The young man I was talking to was not aware that Static-X has recorded new material, I pointed that out as he thought they were just touring and playing the old stuff. We were standing in front of a large monitor and was able to watch the show and it was quite a show.

Years ago, I wanted to see Mudvayne and was short on cash, so I missed their 2009 appearance at The NorVA. Talking to one of the security guys, he said they were picking up teeth after the show, so I was expecting it to be a little rough. The crowd was hyped to see them and they did not disappoint. Chad Gray and Ryan Martinie rushed the stage as they started the song “Dig” quickly followed by “Internal Primates Forever” and “-1”. There was a set of stairs just to the left of center stage and Chad came down to fire up the crowd, I have seen this before where he wants to get close to the fans from when I saw him as lead singer for HELLYEAH. He addressed the crowd about being a metal community, whether your thing was nu-metal, thrash or other subgenre, you were part of the metal community. I thought that was cool considering the division I have seen and heard as a metalhead. This is a tour package that if you can catch it, do so!!!
