Atlantic City, New Jersey – If you were inside Ovation Hall at Ocean Casino on Saturday night, Aug. 1, you knew right away this wasn’t just another nostalgia tour. It was three bands that helped define the soundtrack of the ’90s getting together and reminding everyone they can still bring it. The crowd was a mix of longtime fans who grew up on these songs and younger concertgoers discovering them for the first time. From the opening act to the encore, the energy never dipped.
SPIN DOCTORS got the night rolling, and they wasted no time getting people out of their seats. Formed in New York City in 1988, the band has been together for nearly 40 years. The current lineup features CHRIS BARRON on vocals, ERIC SCHENKMAN on guitar, JACK DALEY on bass, and AARON COMESS behind the drums.
They sounded loose in the best possible way, like four guys who have played together forever and still enjoy every minute of it. “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” had the crowd moving, and when they hit “Two Princes,” the entire room was singing along. BARRON’S voice still has that unmistakable sound, and SCHENKMAN’S guitar work was sharp all night. They didn’t just warm up the audience—they set the tone.
The GIN BLOSSOMS were up next, bringing a completely different vibe without slowing the momentum.
The Tempe, Arizona, band first got together in 1987 and has been going strong for nearly four decades. ROBIN WILSON handled lead vocals, joined by JESSE VALENZUELA and SCOTT HESSEL on guitars, BILL LEEN on bass, and SCOTT JOHNSON on drums. Their set was packed with radio favorites like “Hey Jealousy,” “Found Out About You,” “Follow You Down,” “Allison Road,” and “Until I Fall Away.” These songs still hit just as hard as they did back in the day.
WILSON sounded great, and the band played with the confidence that only comes from years on the road. Nobody was trying to reinvent anything—they knew exactly why people came, and they delivered every song people wanted to hear.
Then the lights went down, and BLUES TRAVELER took over.
The New Jersey band, formed in Princeton in 1987, has spent nearly 40 years building one of the strongest live reputations in rock. JOHN POPPER led the charge with his legendary harmonica playing, backed by guitarist CHANDLER KINCHLA, bassist TAD KINCHLA, drummer BRENDAN HILL, and keyboardist BEN WILSON. Watching POPPER tear through harmonica solos is still something to see. It almost doesn’t make sense how someone can move that fast and never miss a note. The band mixed in favorites like “Run-Around,” “Hook,” “But Anyway,” and plenty of deeper cuts that longtime fans appreciated. Every song felt alive instead of copied from the album versions, and that’s what has always made BLUES TRAVELER one of those bands you have to experience live.
One of the coolest moments of the night came when GIN BLOSSOMS guitarist SCOTT HESSEL walked back onto the stage to jam with BLUES TRAVELER for a couple of songs. It didn’t feel forced or planned for the sake of the tour—it felt like musicians having fun. Then CHRIS BARRON from SPIN DOCTORS joined JOHN POPPER onstage, and the place erupted. If you know the history, it made perfect sense. BLUES TRAVELER and SPIN DOCTORS both came out of New York’s late-’80s club scene and spent years crossing paths before either band became famous. POPPER and BARRON have been friends for decades, and seeing them share the stage again felt like old friends picking up where they left off.
What stood out most all night wasn’t just the songs—it was how much fun these bands were having. Nobody looked like they were going through the motions or cashing in on old hits. They were smiling, joking with the crowd, and feeding off the audience’s energy. That’s something you can’t fake!
As a photographer, it’s easy to tell when a band is really connecting with a crowd. You see it through the lens before you even hear the applause. Fans were on their feet, singing every chorus, dancing in the aisles, and soaking up every minute.
Ocean Casino’s Ovation Hall was the perfect room for a show like this. The sound was clean, the lighting looked great, and every band had room to put on a full production without losing that intimate concert feel. By the end of the night, nobody seemed ready to leave.
Some concerts remind you why you fell in love with live music in the first place. This was one of them. Three bands, nearly 120 years of combined history, dozens of hit songs, a few surprise collaborations, and not a single drop in energy from the opening note to the final encore.
The Atlantic City stop is part of the bands’ 35-date 2026 Summer Tour, which reunites BLUES TRAVELER, GIN BLOSSOMS, and SPIN DOCTORS after the overwhelming success of last year’s run together. Following Ocean Casino, the tour continues through the Midwest and South before wrapping up in Traverse City, Michigan, in September.
