Richmond, VA – The first night of the tour brings the mighty GWAR to play for a sold out hometown crowd with support from Phoenix, Arizona’s groove/thrash band Soulfly and Melbourne, Australia’s grindcore outfit King Parrot.
Kicking off the night, King Parrot brought the anger and got the crowd in the right frame of mind for the rest of the show. Their set consisted of songs from all four of the band’s full length albums, which gave people such as myself who have never seen them before a taste of their music. There was a fair amount of pit activity and a lot of middle fingers during “Fuck You and the Horse You Rode In On”. All I can say is that King Parrot RIPS!!!!

Changing gears from grindcore to groove/thrash/death metal, Soulfly took the audience on a journey through their extensive inventory of full length albums, going as far back as 1998’s “Soulfly”. I dismissed Soulfly as just a nu-metal band without actually listening to them, that was a mistake. While Max Cavalera explored spirituality and Latin rhythms, the anger that you get from his time in Sepultura comes through in much of the band’s output. The band got the crowd going with a good amount of pit activity, headbanging and jumping during “Jumpdafuckup”. I think for a number of us in the crowd, this was our first time seeing Soulfly live, and I can’t wait for next time!!!!

By the number of people walking around in white t-shirts, it was obvious who they came to see and GWAR wasted no time in hosing down the bohabs, and just about everybody else. The photo pit became an oil slick from the amount of fluids sprayed out into the crowd, which made it a challenge not only for photographers, but security personnel who handled the crowd surfers. With the current political climate, you can imagine who and what GWAR was going to sacrifice onstage. In addition to songs from the 2025 EP “The Return of Gor-Gor”, they played a number of classic GWAR hits and surprised the crowd with a cover of Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” before ending the night with “Sick Of You”. It was definitely a good time!!!
