Indianapolis, IN. – BORN TO BE A LEGEND…at least that is what was on the t-shirt at the merch table. But, that statement is so much more than a slogan on a t-shirt. According to Oxford Languages and Google, the definition of “Legend” is an extremely famous or notorious person, especially in a particular field. That is exactly who Billy Porter is becoming and some would say he is already there!
Grammy, Emmy, and 2x Tony Award Winner Billy Porter is currently out on his first ever career-spanning concert tour appropriately titled Black Mona Lisa Tour: Vol. One. This spectacular night of music showcases Billy’s legendary career to date. From the moment the stage curtain opens, Billy and his band of talented musicians featuring (first names only) Antoine on bass, David “Fraz” on drums, Billy’s real life cousin from Pittsburgh Jerome “Rome” on organ, Spencer on guitar and musical director/band leader Christian on keyboards, captivated the audience as they made their way through Billy’s climb to fame and legendary status.
FOR ME, LIFE IS ABOUT BEING POSITIVE AND HOPEFUL, CHOOSING TO BE JOYFUL, CHOOSING TO BE ENCOURAGING, CHOOSING TO BE EMPOWERING.
Now, a girl can’t give ALL the secrets away. I don’t want to spoil the excitement of the show for you – But I will say this…the night features several fabulous outfits and shoes! (OMG! I want to play dress-up in Billy’s closet!) Billy intermingles music (debuting new music as well as covering all his singles) and video clips of special moments throughout his career. There is a whole section dedicated to Lola and Kinky Boots. There is more than one audience interaction. There is even a sneak peek of Billy’s new movie “Our Son” that is getting ready to make its world premiere in June at the Tribeca Film Festival. Billy is only one award away (Oscar) from becoming an EGOT winner and from what I’ve witnessed, that “grand slam” is just around the horizon for Billy Porter. (Fun fact: As of 2023, only 18 people have won competitive EGOTs and only five others have earned the distinction with honorary or special awards).
Everyone has asked me since the show, “How was Billy Porter?” and my response every time is, “Bitch slayed it in Indy”! He was motivational, inspiring, positive, loving, inclusive, and honest. Everything you would want and expect from a LEGEND.
