Virginia Beach, VA – On the second night of the tour Orlando, Florida thrashers Trivium celebrating the 20th anniversary of the album, Ascendancy, brought the heavy to Hampton Roads metalheads with support from Ukraine’s progressive metal monsters Jinjer and Swindon, England’s metalcore outfit Heriot.
This is Heriot‘s first US tour and the reaction to them by the audience was mixed. Some of us, myself included, had never heard of them before the tour announcement. Several times during their set guitarist/vocalist Debbie Gough called for a circle pit. Their set consisted mostly of songs from their September 25, 2024 release Devoured by the Mouth of Hell and played a new song, “Commander at Bay”. Give them a listen if you get the chance.

It has been four years since I last saw Jinjer live and a good portion of the crowd was there for them. Starting their set with the title track of their February 7, 2025 fifth album Duél, they played what I thought was a softer Jinjer than I was expecting. At one point, lead singer Tatiana Shmayluk asked the crowd if they wanted to hear some hardcore and the crowd screamed in excitement. The audience loved them and enjoyed their set.

The last time I saw Trivium live was 2009, when they were touring in support of their fourth album Shogun. Since that time, they have released six albums and three EP’s with Struck Dead on October 31st. The one thing I have always liked about Trivium is their consistency. Listening to them brought back memories of when I saw them live on a regular basis. Replacing long time drummer Alex Bent on short notice with Alex Rudinger was a good move. The last time I saw Alex play live was when he played with The Faceless over a decade ago and he definitely brings plenty of talent to handle Trivium‘s material. They looked and sounded great!!! One of the special treats of the evening is the two little kids that crowd surfed during the set. Nothing like starting them off right!!
