Silver Spring, MD – Sweden’s melodic death metal veterans Arch Enemy decimated The Fillmore with support from melodic death metal masters The Black Dahlia Murder, Athens, Greece’s symphonic death metal band Septicflesh, São Paulo, Brazil’s death metal band Crypta and Los Angeles, California’s metalcore band Thrown Into Exile.

Kicking off the evening was Thrown Into Exile, a band I have never heard of until the announcement of the tour package. I usually avoid metalcore unless it is good metalcore, and these guys play good metalcore. I don’t think anyone caught their setlist for the tour so far, but the four songs listed is not their entire set.

Nihilist
Behind The Veil
You’ve Fallen so Far

I always try to catch Crypta when they come to the area to throw down, and even through they played for about 30 minutes, I felt they left a lasting impression on the crowd as to what an all-female death metal band can sound like. Playing a short set of songs from their two full lengths and introducing a new song “A Portrait Of Decay”. There was plenty of moshing and headbanging but I think the crowd was holding back.

SETLIST:
The Other Side of Anger
Lord of Ruins
The Outsider
A Portrait of Decay
From the Ashes

It has been a minute since I last saw Septicflesh live, I really like their take on death metal with the addition of symphonic elements and playing with orchestras. Unfortunately, they were playing as a three piece as Christos Antoniou is recovering from injuries sustained in an accident. This in no way reduced their brutality as they played through a set of older and more recent music.

SETLIST:
Portrait of a Headless Man
The Vampire From Nazareth
Martyr
Coming Storm
Anubis
Dark Art

This was my first time seeing The Black Dahlia Murder live and the two take a ways from the show is their display of total brutality and the amount of crowd surfers they attracted. It is almost as the first few notes of “Necropolis” was the cue, but for at least ten minutes security was kept busy by a constant flow of crowd surfers. Playing a set of mostly older songs, it gave the crowd a good mix of old and new material to check out between moshing and crowd surfing. I haven’t seen anything like this in years.

A Vulgar Picture
Miscarriage
Statutory Ape
Utopia Black
What a Horrible Night to Have a Curse

The last time I saw Arch Enemy live was 2015 when they played as part of Summer Slaughter and came to The National in Richmond, Virginia as part of what GWAR called B4BQ. At that time, they were led by vocalist Alissa White-Gluz and Jeff Loomis was their lead guitarist. Alissa left to join Dragonforce and Jeff returned to Nevermore. Former Once Human lead vocalist Lauren Hart took the reins and Joey Concepcion replaced Jeff on guitar, and the energy of the band shifted. What is a huge loss for Once Human is a massive gain for Arch Enemy, as Lauren brings some serious energy to the band’s live performances. For fans of older Arch Enemy material, this is the set for you!!!
