Richmond, VA – Durham, North Carolina’s Southern gothic rock band Wailin Storms played to a Saturday night crowd on the last night of their tour with local support from Richmond’s post experimental band Kristeva and black metal outfit Augur.
It has been some time since I caught a show like this with such an eclectic lineup. Starting off the afternoon was Augur, a black metal band I haven’t heard of before. While their set was short, it was energetic. What I liked about them is that they don’t look like a black metal band. Their set consisted of songs from their August 6, 2025 release “Arcane Insurgency” and other material. I look forward to seeing and hearing more from them in the future and maybe possible inclusion in the next Heart Of Winter Fest.

Another band I haven’t heard of before is Kristeva, an experimental, post-metal group that has been around since 2018. In that time they have released five albums/EP’s with “Glory” their most recent on June 26th. Their music is so different than anything I have heard recently that I am still attempting to process what I heard. They only played two songs, “Glory” being one of them which ran over twelve minutes. From the audience reaction, they were the favorite of the night. If you looking for something offbeat to listen to, go check out Kristeva.
Supporting their July 10, 2026 effort “The Arsonist” Wailin Storms brought a unique take on punk, rock and blues with some country flavor added for good measure. This is the second band I have seen live this year that does not shy away from their Southern roots and blends it into their music. Their set included songs from “The Arsonist” as well as 2014’s “Shiver” and 2017’s “Sick City”. If you get a chance to see them love, do not sleep on it!!!!
