Grand Rapids, MI — For the sixth consecutive summer, Upheaval Festival returned to Belknap Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on July 17-18, bringing thousands of rock and metal fans together for another unforgettable weekend. Since its debut in 2021, the festival has become one of the Midwest’s premier destinations for heavy music, combining nationally recognized headliners with emerging artists across multiple stages in the heart of downtown. Belknap Park (and that freakin’ hill) once again provided the perfect backdrop for two days of thunderous performances, passionate fans, and the unmistakable sense of community that has become the festival’s trademark.
It’s A Family Affair
One of the things that continues to set Upheaval Festival apart is its welcoming, family-oriented atmosphere. It’s not uncommon to see parents introducing their children to their very first rock festival while lifelong metal fans

stand shoulder-to-shoulder with friends they’ve made over years of attending. From toddlers wearing oversized hearing protection to seasoned UPRISERS claiming their spot on the rail, Belknap Park truly becomes home to every generation of rock and metal fans. Whether you’re taking in the action from the pit, relaxing on the hillside, or wandering the festival grounds between sets, the overwhelming sense of camaraderie is impossible to miss. A new tradition that I noticed last year that seemed to be more prevalent this year was the exchange of collectible fan-made tokens and friendship bracelets, with many featuring inside jokes like “That F*cking Hill” (a playful nod to Belknap Park’s infamous climb) or celebrating a fan’s “First Concert Experience.” These small keepsakes are traded throughout the weekend, turning complete strangers into friends and giving UPRISERS lasting mementos of the memories they made together.
Let’s Talk about Poppy
One of the weekend’s biggest storylines wasn’t a performance; it was the one that never fully happened. Scheduled to perform Friday evening before Gojira, Poppy ultimately chose not to sing after hazardous wildfire smoke blanketed Grand Rapids, pushing the Air Quality Index (AQI) above 350+. Her masked band still took the stage, delivering a nearly hour-long instrumental set while wearing N95 masks beneath their stage attire. However, with no announcement from Poppy before or during the performance, many fans were left confused, questioning whether there had been technical issues, an unexpected cancellation, or another reason for the absence of vocals. Social media quickly filled with speculation until Poppy addressed the situation on Instagram approximately 35 minutes after the set concluded, explaining that the dangerous air quality made it unsafe for her to breathe and perform vocally.
While many fans supported her decision to prioritize her health under such extreme conditions, others expressed frustration over the lack of communication at the festival. Some felt that a brief announcement or a quick video message from Poppy addressing the crowd from backstage could have prevented much of the confusion surrounding one of the weekend’s most talked-about moments. Adding to the online discussion were photos that circulated showing Poppy seated side stage without a mask during parts of the instrumental performance, creating further debate among attendees about the circumstances surrounding the unusual set.
The After-Party Bonus (tickets sold separately):
The post-festival after-shows kept the Upheaval energy alive long after the final notes echoed through Belknap Park. Friday night’s After Party at The Garage Bar & Grill, hosted by DJ ROCK CITY, gave UPRISERS the perfect opportunity to unwind, swap stories from the day’s performances, and connect with fellow fans while gearing up for Saturday’s festivities. The celebration continued Saturday night at The Intersection, where metalcore favorites Memphis May Fire from Denton, Texas, brought their signature intensity to the stage. Signed to Rise Records, the band delivered a powerful performance that provided the perfect soundtrack to close out the weekend. Both after-parties extended the festival experience beyond the park grounds, keeping the momentum, friendships, and excitement going well after the sun set over Belknap Park.
