Nashville, IN – “You’ve got a real type of thing goin’ down, gettin’ down. There’s a whole lot of rhythm goin’ round“…is the best way to describe what went down at Brown County Music Center, Friday March 14th when TROMBONE SHORTY AND ORLEANS AVENUE brought the SHORTY GRAS TOUR to Nashville, IN with a little support from their friends, TANK AND THE BANGAS

The SHORTY GRAS TOUR is a quick three week run taking place in March 2025 that brings the energy, spirit, and sounds of NEW ORLEANS MARDI GRAS to the Midwest and East Coast. The tour was first introduced last year and quickly became a fan favorite; offering audiences far beyond Louisiana a taste of the NEW ORLEANS MARDI GRAS tradition and spirit.

Kicking off the night’s festivities was Louisiana’s own TANK AND THE BANGAS featuring front-lady Tarriona “Tank” Ball. It’s also worth noting that TANK AND THE BANGAS just won their first Grammy for their most recent release THE HEART, THE MIND, THE SOUL in BEST SPOKEN WORD POETRY ALBUM. (Congrats TANK AND THE BANGAS! How cool is that?) They did a great job in setting the mood for the night with a set filled with funk, soul and a little hip hop for good measure.

After a quick set change, TROMBONE SHORTY AND ORLEANS AVENUE made their way to the stage featuring charismatic frontman TROY “TROMBONE SHORTY” ANDREWS, along with long-time band members DAN OESTREICHER (baritone sax), PETE MURANO (guitar), JOEY PEEBLES (drums), and BK JACKSON (tenor sax) and three others (bass, guitar, and backup vocals) that I unfortunately didn’t catch their names. (If you did, please let me know and I will update the article).

The set was on fire from the moment the band hit the stage. With a set consisting of beloved covers like Prince’sLet’s Go Crazy“, Parliament’sGive Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker)“, and Allan Toussaint’s “On Your Way Down” (made famous by Little Feat) to songs you’d expect to hear during Mardi Gras including “When the Saints Go Marching In” and Trombone’s own “Hurricane Season“, I’m not sure the crowd ever sat down. At one point, Trombone left the stage to play through the crowd in true Mardi Gras/Street Parade style to the excitement of fans. It was a P-A-R-T-Y in true New Orleans style and one that those in the house will soon not forget! Let’s hope we can hold Trombone to his words when he told the adoring crowd, “they’d be back for sure”.
