Zoetermeer, The Netherlands – It shows once again that even after being in the music industry for over 50 years, you can still be incredibly successful. Steve Hackett seems unstoppable with a new album released this year (The Circus And The Nightwhale) and a new tour with dates well into the end of this year. The Netherlands is also visited again on this tour with no less than four sold-out shows in a row at De Boerderij, Zoetermeer.

With enough inspiration to continue making and releasing new music, Steve Hackett also plays a lot of old Genesis songs. This tour mainly focuses on the album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. The show started with some solo work by Steve Hackett, including “People Of The Smoke”, “Circo Inferno” and “These Passing Clouds” from the latest album The Circus And The Nightwhale, and also “The Devil’s Cathedral” from the 2021 album Surrender Of Silence. But, of course, older work such as “Every Day”, “A Tower Struck Down” and “Shadow Of The Hierophant” were played.

After a short break, the band returned to the stage and began its second set, playing highlights from the album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. An album that was released in 1974 but is still loved among Genesis fans. Even though the album is too long to play in its entirety, on this evening, I think the band made a good selection of highlights of the album. The title song of the album, “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway”, could surely not be missed and was followed by the musically compelling “Fly On A Windshield”. De Boerderij isn’t a very large music venue, which is making the show feel much more intimate than in a larger hall. Especially with songs like “The Carpet Crawlers” that intimacy between the crowd and the band works very well.

To end the Lamb Lies Down part, the cheerful “It” was played. Followed by some other Genesis hits. The audience was specially invited to sing along to “Dancing With The Moonlit Knight”, which they did with all their heart, making it one of the highlights of the evening.

For the encore “Firth Of Fifth” was followed by an impressive drum solo by drummer Craig Blundell which was received with loud cheers by the audience. Steve Hackett and his fantastic band once again managed to captivate the audience with their amazingly strong live performance. I’m curious to see which album he will choose to tour next year because it seems clear that Steve Hackett is far from done playing live shows. And neither is the audience to see him play!
